About the Item

Set two lounge chairs model EA 108 designer Charles Eames for Herman Miller production 1960s. Charles Eames began very early in life as a designer to the extent that he was employed, as early as age 14, in the workshops of the Laclede Steel Company. He studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis. He proposed to his professors the study of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright but, at first dissuaded from his intent, was later expelled from the school on the grounds that-we read in the commentary of one of the professors-"his point of view was too modern." A great influence on him was Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, with whom he shared some professional experiences and became friends. In 1938, at the latter's invitation, he moved to Michigan, where he studied architecture at Cranbrook Academy of Art and later taught there, also becoming head of the Industrial Design department. In 1941 he won, with Eero Saarinen, the competition for MoMA in New York concerning "Organic Design in Home Furnishing." Their work showed a new way of conceiving wooden furniture, experimenting with the use of bentwood plywood, as done a few years earlier by Alvar Aalto. In 1941 he was united in second marriage to Ray Kaiser, a painter, with whom he shared his subsequent professional life. Following the marriage he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he founded with his wife what was henceforth known as the "Eames" studio. In 1948 Charles and Ray Eames participated, with Armchair La Chaise, in the Museum of Modern Art in New York's "International Competition for Low-Cost Design," held in response to the perceived postwar need for inexpensive, well-designed furniture for the average family. In the late 1940s he was involved in the experimental Case Study Houses housing program, designing among other things his own house, later referred to as a forerunner example of high-tech architecture. The Eames' multifaceted output spanned several fields including, in addition to design, architecture and film. He was the recipient of several prestigious awards including: the Kaufmann International Design Award in 1961, the 25 Year American Institute of Architects Award in 1977, and the Queen's Gold Medal for Architecture in 1979.
