About the Item

A contemporary seating piece by Marrakech-based design studio Mādda. Titled "Arz"—the Arabic word for Cedar—this chair is a study in reductive modernism, rooted in North African craftsmanship. The design takes its cue from the long-standing tradition of decorative cedar wood carving in Morocco but inverts the approach. By stripping away the customary ornamentation, the piece emphasizes pure geometry. The construction features a series of intermeshing flat surfaces that lock together, creating a stark, architectural silhouette that celebrates the raw beauty of the material. While the primary surfaces are sleek and planar, the design retains a distinct tactile element. The longitudinal strut (central brace) is intricately hand-gouged. This hidden detail adds textural depth and serves as a subtle nod to the hand of the master woodworker. Crafted entirely from solid Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica), the chair is defined by its ruddy, warm tones and rich grain. As the wood is lightly finished, the piece retains the soothing, natural aroma characteristic of this indigenous mountain timber.
