About the Item

Cassina Zig-Zag Chair — Early Cassina Production (c. 1973–1978) Rietveld’s iconic Zig-Zag Chair (1934) remains one of the purest expressions of early modernism. A chair reduced to a single graphic gesture. Gerrit Rietveld once joked that the design started as a bit of a provocation, a playful experiment to see how few structural elements a functioning chair actually needed. What began as a “joke” became a breakthrough in architectural furniture. This example is an early Cassina-licensed production, identifiable by its blue “Cassina / Meubelmakerij Rietveld” stamp, a mark used only in the mid-1970s after Cassina secured exclusive rights to Rietveld’s work in 1973. These first-era Cassina pieces represent the earliest officially authorized reissues, produced with tight adherence to Rietveld’s original construction methods. Crafted in solid wood with exposed dovetail joinery, the entire structure relies on a calculated Z-form, transferring weight diagonally downward so the chair can stand and support weight without traditional legs or cross-supports. It’s minimalism pushed to the edge of engineering.
