About the Item

Exquisite and very refined pair of English chairs from the early 19th century in lacquered wood with mother-of-pearl inlays and gold polychrome, with a clear Asian or Philippine influence. The openwork design of the backrest, with its central medallion, is completely decorated with carved mother-of-pearl inlays and floral motifs in gold. Mesh or matted seats, as functional as they were decorative and widely used in the 18th and 19th centuries in British and French furniture. Cabriolet front legs. The most notable feature is the use of mother-of-pearl inlays, a detail evoking the laborious work of Japanese or Chinese lacquer. These types of materials have their roots in a mix of cultural influences that evolved over the centuries and were very common during the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe in luxury furniture, as mother-of-pearl was a highly prized material for its rarity and beauty. Mother-of-pearl was widely used in the decorative art of Asia, especially in China and Japan. These countries used mother-of-pearl in furniture, screens and lacquered boxes to create intricate and detailed patterns, which fascinated European merchants. Contact with Asia increased significantly thanks to maritime trade, especially through the East India Companies (British, Dutch and Portuguese). Lacquered and mother-of-pearl decorated objects were exported to Europe, where they became symbols of luxury and status. Thus, European cabinetmakers began to incorporate mother-of-pearl into their designs, influenced by these Asian imports. For its part, the Philippines played a key role in popularizing the use of this material in decorative objects and furniture in Europe and America due to its connection to global trade during the colonial era. During the Victorian era, historic and exotic styles were revalued, and the incorporation of mother-of-pearl became very popular again. Executed with black lacquer, holding a bronze hand mirror ( ekagami) Configured with five smooth-running drawers of different Size. Two are equipped with slender "hirute"-shaped bail handles and three with decorative pull-rings. The front-and backside featuring oval grips for easy transport. Surmounted by a mirror frame in a shape reminiscent of a Shintô shrine torii-gate- a twin-posted framework with a triangular crossbar flared in upswept Chinese-style gable ( Karahafu) endings.
