About the Item
These artistic chairs have a sculptural look that is often refereed to as an “oyster”. From Finn Juhl’s “France chair” to Seymour “James” Weiner’s “Oyster” chair, this style has been popular since the mid-century era. This pair offers an interesting design twist to make them stand out from the rest.
The nickname of the style stems from the shape of oysters, mimicked by the seats and backs, however, these chairs’ seats have a convex shape, meaning they curve outward instead of the classic concave seats. While simple, this design element makes all the difference, creating a dynamic and open look and providing extra comfort and support for the sitter. This peculiar angle is supported by the solid wood frames’ raised parts in the front and towards the back, holding the seats up to create the convex shape and an almost floating impression. The elongated front legs fill the open space left between the seats and the frames, which is another simple yet brilliant detail. The back legs are similarly elongated to support the backrests, adding to the floating, gravity defying look. The rounded shapes enhanced by the light upholstery and the polished wood are paired with tapered legs that provide the design with a modern, mid-century edge.
With the major rise in popularity that mid-century modern experienced, it’s easy to see touches of the style in contemporary homes. The natural and unfading beauty of wood, and the understated, but ingeniously stylish design is timeless of the era. With an outstanding balance of straight and curved lines, quality materials, and unmistakeably modern design elements, this pair of chairs is sure to provide a stylish touch to any interior.

European Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Europe, circa 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-Century Modern, a design movement devoted to timeless functionalism established itself in the post-war period with furniture that appealed to the senses. Furniture design was guided by the famous maxim: “Form follows function.”
For midcentury designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and these fully upholstered lounge chairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. The duality of two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason. The two materials complement each other by highlighting their unique material qualities. This pair falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic midcentury: furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences, and which was a lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic...
