About the Item

Fisherman Chair reveals itself as foreign, almost alien-like. The piece seems to have been recovered from the bottom of the ocean on a lost planet. It is generative in the sense that it accidentally opens a narrative. An object that generates fissure from which fantasy spills into reality. Informing an imaginative play and creating a scenography from a parallel fiction. Fisherman Chair is part of a limited series of unique objects that integrate the use of upcycled electroplating rods. These rods, regularly used for submerging metal items into chrome baths, pile up residue through the years which result in heavy conglomerates of copper, nickel and chrome. Byproducts of an industrial process but which remit to organic forms. This paradoxical entity which’s finish stands as the “stereotype of the artificial”(Enzo Manzini), also directly references the natural, with coral like formations. The specificity of the material’s unique pattern formations reining over the objects final appearance. In the studio we have been concerned for more than a year now in recovering these discarded rods from chrome workshops. The material is difficult to work with because it is a conglomeration of different metals which cannot weld together. The material’s limitations in a sense dictated the objects form. We could only work with the rods by creating rudimentarily joints. This made for an uneven object; a crooked chair, with a coral texture and industrial shine. A chair that acts as a pseudo prop and creates narrative paths. Here is a short story about its first owner: He learned patience as a young man. Subdued to the ocean's will he would wait. An old sailor and fisherman cursed in a land-lock had taken refuge in a small service room apartment he barely ever left. He had found a kind of maternal security in his isolated castration. Increasingly he would experience senile sickness. A dizziness he welcomed, as it reminded him of his days at sea. It was only until the waves of pathological ebb and flow turned into a gale that he found himself in a hospital waiting room. He would sit and wait. Holding his cane as he once did his fishing rod. His hospital visits were only precautionary but ever more frequent, nevertheless, there was never a need to see a doctor. He would only sit and wait. Treated by the waiting room. Exercising patience until the storm passed and his mind again settled on a light-headed float.

Meltdown Chair, Bronze #2 by Tom Price, Contemporary, Limited Edition
By Tom Price
Located in PARIS, FR
Meltdown Chair, Bronze #2 is a piece by English artist Tom Price, from the Meltdown Series. This chair is created using a ‘lost-plastic’ casting technique: a chair made from polypropylene tubes is encased in a thick ceramic shell and then melted out. The artist then pours molten bronze into the empty space that has formed and, once the metal has cooled and hardened, the ceramic shell is broken away. A work on the surface follows: the underside is left raw and patinated black while the seat is polished until it acquires a bright mirror finish. Every chair in the edition is unique because the ceramic mould must be broken to release the bronze, and therefore the entire process must be repeated for every new edition. Launched in 2007, the Meltdown Series earned Tom Price widespread international acclaim for his innovative production processes and eye-catching approach to working with commonplace plastic products. The way of assembling the plastic material and the mostly unpredictable patterns created by the heating method ensure that every piece is unique and unrepeatable. This design pieces are true sculptural objects, while at the same time being fully functional and very robust. Meltdown Chairs are included in the permanent collections of several Museums, including SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (US), the Denver Art Museum (US), The Nelson Atkins Museum (US), Chatsworth House (UK), MKG Hamburg (Germany) and the Amore Pacific Museum (South Korea). Works from the Meltdown Series have been exhibited extensively throughout the USA, South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. They have been included in many high-profile museum exhibitions, including SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (US), MAD Museum of Art and Design New York (US); The Mint Museum (US); Denver Art Museum (US); Design Museum Holon (Israel); Design Museum Gent (Belgium); NRW Forum Dusseldorf (Germany); The Latvian National Museum of Art in Riga (Latvia). They have also featured at international art and design fairs, including Design Miami Basel (Switzerland); Sao Paolo Design Festival (Brazil); Cheongju International Craft Biennale (South Korea), Design Days Dubai (United Arab Emirates); Gwangju Biennale (South Korea) and Lodz International Design Biennale (Poland). Finally, the series has been featured in multiple publications, including: The Campaign for Art...

Bronze Sculptural Panama Chair, 21st Century by Mattia Biagi
By Mattia Biagi
Located in Culver City, CA
"Panama Bronze" is an art and design project, the result of the collaboration between the artist Mattia Biagi and Promemoria. The artist has poured hot tar on a real Panama chair, to bring the object closer to the material and to make it melt in the ground. Mattia Biagi has created what he himself called the "polarity of destruction and conservation". "Although the melted tar destroys the object it touches, in this case, the Panama chair - an elegant and finely crafted object - it simultaneously preserves it in its new and very different form". This is how the original silhouette of the Panama chair was turned into its new incarnation. Thanks to its experience in working with bronze, Promemoria has helped Mattia to refine his work of art, transforming the iconic Panama chair, designed by Romeo...
