About the Item
In mid-century French design, timeless elegance and craftsmanship dominated the era and organic materials such as wood and papercord. Crafted from the warm, reddish-brown hues of cherry wood, these armchairs showcase the inherent beauty and versatility of this prized wood and the truly timeless charm of handmade furniture.
Cherry wood, known for its fine grain and rich colours, has long been a favoured choice among furniture artisans. Its natural lustre and ability to develop a beautiful patina over time make it an ideal material for crafting enduring and appealing pieces. This pair of armchairs boasts gracefully curved armrests and sculpted back slats, showcasing the artisan's keen attention to form and detail. The curved arms not only provide a comfortable resting surface, but also contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of the chairs. The sculpted back slats, with their gentle curves and precisely carved details, add a touch of individual character and refinement to the design. Each element of the chairs reflects the organic sensibility that defined French mid-century design, where form and function seamlessly converged. However, what truly injects these chairs with their organic appeal is their seats woven from papercord. This choice of material adds an organic and tactile dimension to the design. Papercord, made from twisted and woven paper fibres, offers a natural and eco-friendly alternative to traditional seating materials. Its rich texture and earthy tones complement the warmth of the cherry wood, creating a harmonious balance in both visual and tactile aspects. The meticulous craftsmanship of the joinery further enhances the chairs' allure; impeccably constructed with no visible screws, the seamless connections speak volumes about the artisan's dedication to precision and quality. The absence of visible hardware not only contributes to the chairs' aesthetic purity but also underscores the skilled craftsmanship that went into their creation.
These French cherry wood armchairs from the 1950s embody the essence of mid-century design, where natural materials, graceful forms, and meticulous craftsmanship converged. The marriage of cherry wood and woven papercord not only highlights the organic side of French design but also ensures that these chairs remain not just functional, but also enduring heirloom pieces. As they continue to age gracefully, these chairs stand as testaments to the enduring appeal of mid-century French craftsmanship.

Wood Turned Chairs with Woven Rush Seats, Europe Ca 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-century designers were eager to break free from the aesthetics of the past and experiment with new forms, and techniques. At the same time, especially in Europe, the modernist design movement was often based on traditional styles and techniques, such as turned chairs.
Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in the late 16th and early 17th century. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. In turned furniture, the individual wooden spindles of the piece were made by shaping them with chisels and gouges while they were being spun, or turned between the centre points of a lathe. The construction of this pair is evocative of the more robust Arts and Crafts Movement, featuring subtle decorative elements such as the finials atop the backs. The sphere-shaped finials aren’t the only ornamentations on the design; the shape of the two splats on the back, the carved stretchers and carving on the feet are all decorative features that make this pair visually arresting. In later turned chairs, like this pair, rush seats were common. Here, the seats are woven around the frames with a light colour that beautifully contrasts to the dark, patinated wood. The partnership of the two natural materials is very effective as well; the wood and rush pair...
