About the Item

An antique French slipper chair from the Louis-Philippe period, circa 1830s, distinguished by its softly rounded, fully upholstered form and intimate scale. Designed for comfort rather than formality, this type of seating was intended for private rooms — bedrooms, dressing rooms, and salons — where ease and informality were paramount. The generous seat and enveloping back reflect the Louis-Philippe emphasis on domestic comfort, marking a departure from earlier, more ceremonial French furniture. The proportions are balanced and inviting, characteristic of early nineteenth-century French slipper chairs. The chair has been reupholstered in an archive floral waxed linen fabric by Colefax Fowler. Finished with a ruffled skirt, the chair has been fully reupholstered in the traditional manner associated with the period using all natural fibres inc horsehair. This marriage of an early nineteenth-century French frame coupled with Colefax Fowler archive textile makes it a unique piece, well suited to bedrooms, dressing rooms, or, richly layered decorative interiors.
