About the Item

Designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Laukaan Puu in the 1960s, the Hongisto chair embodies the Finnish master’s dedication to honest materials and democratic design. Constructed from solid pine, the chair features a distinctive, slightly curved backrest with a cut-out profile that balances structural strength with visual lightness. The square seat and robust legs are connected with straightforward joinery, highlighting Tapiovaara’s commitment to functionality and timeless simplicity. The Hongisto model is a fine example of Tapiovaara’s philosophy, which blended modernist clarity with the warmth and tradition of Nordic craftsmanship. Its restrained aesthetic, relying on proportion and natural grain rather than ornament, reflects the ideals of mid-century Finnish design—where practicality and beauty are inseparable. This piece shows natural patina and wear consistent with its age, including surface marks, scuffs, and minor edge losses (documented in photos). These signs of use reinforce its authenticity and history without affecting its structural integrity. An iconic example of postwar Finnish furniture, the Hongisto chair is both collectible and versatile, working equally well as a dining, desk, or accent chair. It is a sought-after piece for collectors of Nordic modernism and admirers of Tapiovaara’s democratic design ethos.

Nordiska Kompaniet Hytte Armchair in Solid Pine, Swedish Modern, 1940s
By Axel Einar Hjorth, David Rosén, Nordiska Kompaniet
Located in The Hague, NL
This rare armchair was produced by the Swedish company Nordiska Kompaniet in the early 1940s. It belongs to the 'Hytte' series, which is documented in several NK catalogs and advertisements from the time. The Hytte series was a continuation of Axel Einar Hjorth's Sportstugemöbler ("sports cabin furnishings"), a collection of pinewood furniture designed for country homes. After Hjorth, designer David Rosén carried on this style, creating several series for Nordiska Kompaniet. Crafted entirely from pinewood, the chair features club-shaped, tapered legs connected by stretchers, a slatted and slightly curved backrest, and carved armrests. It is versatile and can be used as a desk chair or an elegant side chair. The chair remains in completely original condition, with a natural and even patina on the pinewood. It shows minor wear consistent with age and use. One of the four furniture...
