About the Item
Rare and highly decorative Italian giltwood chair featuring an elaborate chinoiserie-inspired backrest. The carved and gilded wooden structure is surmounted by a pagoda-form crest supported by turned columns, with suspended bells at either side—an evocative Orientalist detail typical of late 18th-century European fascination with East Asian motifs.
At the center of the backrest is a polychrome-painted figure dressed in traditional Asian attire, framed architecturally within the pagoda structure, creating a theatrical and symbolic focal point. The seat is generously proportioned and newly upholstered in a light, neutral fabric, offering an elegant contrast to the warm, time-softened gilding.
The chair stands on turned legs joined by stretchers, retaining its original gilded surface with visible wear, patina, and craquelure consistent with age, enhancing its authenticity and charm.
An exceptional example of Italian chinoiserie furniture, combining sculptural fantasy, craftsmanship, and decorative sophistication.
