About the Item

The Kutitji Chair by Australian designer Trent Jansen is a deeply expressive collectible piece shaped by his signature method of Design Anthropology—an approach that blends research, cultural storytelling, and co-creation to produce objects with meaning far beyond their form. At the core of Jansen’s practice is Poiesis, the Ancient Greek concept of creating objects that carry purpose, memory, and myth. The Kutitji Chair embodies this philosophy, functioning not only as furniture but as a vessel for cultural narrative, identity, and dialogue. Through sustained relationships with collaborators such as Johnny Nargoodah and Errol Evans, Jansen creates pieces that honour marginal histories, preserve cultural knowledge, and reflect layered stories of Country and belonging. The Kutitji Chair emerges from this lineage of respectful exchange, its form shaped by the merging of perspectives, values, and lived experience. Jansen’s practice is internationally recognised for its conceptual depth and cultural sensitivity. Based in Thirroul, Australia, he holds a PhD from the University of Wollongong and lectures at UNSW Art Design in Sydney. His early experience working under Marcel Wanders in Amsterdam—followed by collaborations with manufacturers such as Moooi, DesignByThem, and Tait—has informed a body of work noted for its poetic rigor. As Wanders once remarked, “Trent has a great deal of respect for cultural heritage and is extraordinarily thorough in incorporating cultural identity and history into his works … his approach has helped define the Australian design identity.” The Kutitji Chair stands as a powerful example of this ethos—an object born from cultural exchange, historical inquiry, and an unwavering dedication to storytelling through design.
