About the Item

Mario Ceroli “Fratina” Chair in Pine for Poltronova, 1972, Italy Designed by Mario Ceroli in 1972 and produced by Poltronova, the “Fratina” chair is one of the most striking examples of Italian radical design of the early 1970s. Executed entirely in solid pine, this sculptural chair reflects Ceroli’s fascination with pure materiality, artisanal construction, and architectural form. Ceroli first presented this design in the scenography for Luca Ronconi’s theatrical production of Richard III, where his furniture became an integral part of the stage composition. The Fratina chair’s monumental high back, cut-out arches, and primitive silhouette evoke both medieval ritual objects and modern sculptural minimalism. Its handmade quality and natural patina express Ceroli’s deep respect for wood as a living medium — a recurring theme throughout his career. This example is an original early production by Poltronova, stamped and authenticated, showcasing a beautiful warm pine tone with visible grain and character. It serves equally well as a sculptural accent piece, a collector’s design object, or a centerpiece in a contemporary interior. Condition: Excellent vintage condition with light, natural patina consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and stable.
