Handcrafted Tzalam Wood Armchair – A Collaboration of Design and Ancestral Craftsmanship
Mid Century Modern Design
Nestled in the Michoacán highlands lies Cuanajo, a town deeply rooted in the traditions of the Purépecha people, the largest Indigenous group in the region. It is here that master craftsman Alejandro Valencia Huacuja leads the Mora-Huacuja workshop, continuing a generations-old family legacy of woodworking.
Alejandro learned the art of working with wood as a child, growing up surrounded by the textures, scents, and sounds of the craft. “Touching the nature of wood, appreciating its texture and smell, is the beginning of a story that will continue to exist in those who enjoy it,” he says.
Together with Mexican architect Estrella Zamorano, who brings her deep passion for design and her roots in Michoacán, they’ve created a furniture collection that is not only visually stunning but also rich in cultural significance. Estrella’s vision is to bridge ancestral knowledge with contemporary design, empowering artisan communities while creating lasting pieces for modern living.
Crafted with high-end solid Tzalam wood (Lysiloma latisiliquum), also known as Caribbean Walnut, each armchair is a one-of-a-kind piece, handcrafted with care, passion, and unparalleled dedication. The Tzalam wood used is sustainably harvested, ethically sourced, and certified for export, ensuring not only exceptional quality but also respect for nature and fair-trade practices.
Featuring fine natural leather and a minimalist yet timeless silhouette, this modern armchair is both elegant and enduring. By collaborating with artisans from the towns of Ihuatzio and Cuanajo, Estrella and Alejandro ensure that every chair is not just furniture—it’s a living expression of Mexico’s rich cultural heritage and a beacon of artisanal excellence.
“It’s not just about crafting beautiful designs,” says Estrella, “but about preserving the knowledge of our ancestors while creating something that speaks to today’s lifestyle and stands the test of time.”

In the Michoaca´n hillside lays Cuanajo, a town inhabited entirely by Purhe´pechas, the largest group of indigenous people in the state of Michoaca´n.
Alejandro Valencia Huacuja, craftsman and manufacturer, leads the Mora-Huacuja local workshop in Cuanajo, a town whose main economic activity is the work with wood and its varieties. He has been working with wood since he was a child growing up between dust and sticks. Being able to learn from his family a tradition and way of life that has been passed on from generation to the next.
“Touching the nature of wood, appreciating its texture and smell, is the beginning of a story that will continue to exist in those who enjoy it,” says Alejandro.
Estrella on the other hand, with a degree in architecture and her great passion for design had always wanted to involve her work with the people from her home state, Michoaca´n. After meeting Alejandro they both decided to start their own furniture line, focusing on Conacaste wood, a very elegant and resistant wood from the region.
“It’s not just about crafting beautiful designs, but about preserving the knowledge of our ancestors while creating something that speaks to today’s lifestyle while standing the test of time,” says Estrella.
