About the Item
Set of three chairs in red-painted wood with black leather upholstery.
Denmark, 1840s.
A rare and architecturally refined set of three Danish chairs by Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, one of the founding figures of Danish design and architecture.
Bindesbøll was trained as an architect but worked with an artistic freedom that transcended disciplines. His work united classical proportion with a deeply personal sense of form and color — an approach that would later come to define the Danish design tradition. His most celebrated building, Thorvaldsens Museum (completed 1848), remains a cornerstone of Danish neoclassicism: an architectural manifesto that fused ancient geometry with vivid polychromy, establishing a new visual language for modern Denmark.
The same balance between structure and decoration, discipline and emotion, is evident in these chairs. The clear, sculptural silhouettes, measured proportions, and subtle play of surface and color demonstrate the architect’s mastery of form and his belief that design should embody both utility and poetry.
Bindesbøll’s influence extended far beyond his own lifetime. His synthesis of craft, architecture, and ornament profoundly shaped later generations — architects such as Kay Fisker, Kaj Gottlob, and Kaare Klint all built upon his principles of proportion, clarity, and respect for material honesty. In this way, Bindesbøll’s vision became the philosophical bedrock of what the world would later recognize as Danish Modern.
Furniture by Bindesbøll is rare, and surviving examples like this set provide a tangible link to the very roots of Denmark’s design heritage — where architecture, craftsmanship, and artistry were conceived as one unified discipline.
