About the Item

This set of four chairs, designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in 1948, is a refined example of Brazilian modernist furniture. Crafted in peroba wood with woven straw seats, the chairs reflect Tenreiro’s commitment to lightness, elegance, and the honest use of materials. Each chair stands 102 cm high and measures 50 cm in both width and depth, offering a balanced and harmonious proportion. The design is characterised by a tall, sculptural backrest formed by slender vertical rods that taper gently into a softly curved top rail, reminiscent of a butterfly's wings or a subtle heart shape. The seat is made of handwoven straw, bringing a tactile warmth and visual softness that contrasts beautifully with the polished wooden frame. Slightly splayed legs give the chairs a sense of movement and stability, while also enhancing their graceful silhouette. Rooted in both European modernist ideals and Brazilian artisanal traditions, these chairs exemplify Tenreiro’s mastery in fusing form and function with lyrical simplicity.Through materials and style, the chairs evoke the essence of Tenreiro designs, balancing traditional values and modern aesthetics. Literature: M. C. Loschiavo Dos Santos, Bolsa de Arte (ed.), Tenreiro, Rio de Janeiro 1998, p.82.
