Set of eight dining chairs, maple, Europe, 1970s
These maple chairs from the 1970s have an unmistakably raw and whimsical feel, as if they have wandered straight from the pages of a storybook or emerged from a woodland cottage tucked deep in the woods. The design rejects clean lines in favor of something more tactile, more immediate, taking inspiration from Mother Nature. Each chair appears as though it has grown into being rather than been built; legs curve unpredictably like tree roots seeking earth, seats are thick and uneven like worn river stones, and the backs rise with gentle irregularity, reminiscent of leaves or petals. Crafted entirely by hand, the chairs showcase a reverence for the material itself. The maple is worked in such a way that its natural idiosyncrasies: clusters of small pin-knots, and swirling textures are not hidden but celebrated. Whether placed in a moss-covered cabin or surrounded by sleek contemporary design, these sculptural chairs will, either way, bring warmth, wonder, and a touch of the mythical to any space they inhabit.
