About the Item
A pair of English 19th century country elm armchairs. Circa 1860.
The chairs are constructed in English elm with decorative carved fluted central rail and scrolled arms. The shaped seat being of single plank mahogany.
Overall in very good condition, showing natural wear to the finish, the chairs have been waxed and have a lovely matching colour. There are some marks and light knock consistent with their age.
Structurally very sound, with no loose joints. There are traces of woodworm around the chairs, these appear dormant but as a precaution they have been injected with a woodworm treatment and filled.
The chairs have a very slightly different height, this is how they have been constructed and not due to wear on the legs. One of the chairs has had plaques added at some point to the back, now missing. As shown in the photographs.
1) 84cm high x 54.5cm wide x 50.5cm deep. The seat height is 42cm. The arm height is 71.5cm.
2) 82cm high x 53.5cm wide x 51cm deep. The seat height is 42cm. The arm height is 71cm.

The walnut frames are in very good condition and have their original patina, showing some age with use, they have been lightly waxed.
One of the chairs cane seats professionally re-caned, and it has been aged to resemble the other original cane seat.
This same chair has had the under rail replaced in oak with two bolts, as shown in photograph number 12. This was done many years ago - I would say about 80 plus years, looking at the construction. Also added at a similar time under the seat, one small rail either side. The wooden dome...
