About the Item
Exquisite Pair of 18th-Century Spanish Colonial Chairs in Embossed Córdoba Leather
A magnificent and imposing pair of 18th-century Spanish Colonial high-back chairs, uniting the sculptural gravitas of colonial woodwork with the artisanal sophistication of embossed Córdoba leather. Rising to an impressive 128 cm, these chairs embody the ceremonial presence and architectural elegance typical of early colonial interiors in Spain’s American territories.
The tall backrests, richly clad in original tooled leather, display intricate vegetal scrolls, acanthus leaves, heraldic emblems, and mythological figures, all framed by bold brass nail-heads. The craftsmanship is characteristic of Córdoba’s renowned leather tradition, where hides were hand-pressed, moulded, and decorated in high relief to evoke the opulence of the Baroque world.
The bases, carved in dense, dark, beautifully patinated wood, feature turned legs and exuberant interlaced front stretchers, a hallmark of Spanish colonial carpentry. The claw-like feet and robust proportions reinforce their origin and historic character.
As is expected from furniture over two centuries old, the pair displays wear, restorations, and traces of time that attest to their long life. Importantly, one of the seats was replaced at a later date, done with sensitivity to match the overall aesthetic while reflecting the piece’s continued use throughout generations. This nuance adds depth to their narrative without detracting from their commanding visual impact.
Rare in scale, authenticity, and decorative richness, this pair is ideal for collectors of Spanish Colonial art, sophisticated interiors, or anyone seeking furniture with undeniable presence, history, and soul.

Pair of 19th Century Brazilian Empire Armchairs in Carved Tropical Hardwood
A striking and authentic pair of Brazilian armchairs from the second half of the 19th century, crafted in richly grained tropical hardwood—most likely jacarandá or another noble native species. Embodying the graceful elegance of the Brazilian Empire period, these pieces combine classical European influence with regional craftsmanship, resulting in a form that is both sculptural and historically evocative.
Each chair presents beautifully shaped lines, with gently curved legs and arm supports, and a caned seat restored using traditional methods. The backrests are adorned with finely hand-carved floral and shell motifs, emblematic of the Luso-Brazilian decorative language of the time. The lower splats echo this detail in harmonious proportion, adding refinement and rhythm to the composition.
The surface retains a charming, timeworn patina, enriched by subtle wear and age that speak to the authenticity and dignity of these pieces. Their scale and presence make them ideal for use as statement accent chairs in living rooms, salons, libraries, or conservatories.
Rare to find in matched pairs, these armchairs would suit both collectors of colonial and imperial Latin American furniture...
