About the Item
This pair of elegant low-back armchairs date to the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911), designed with spindle-back frames and clean-lined silhouettes. Known as a rose chair (meiguiyi) or writing chair (wenyi), this type of informal seat was traditionally used in one's personal quarters and evolved from earlier chairs of the Song period (960 to 1279) crafted from bent bamboo.
The chairs are expertly crafted with mortise-and-tenon joinery of a lustrous hardwood with warm coloring and dense grain. The back and arm crestrails are supported by vertical spindles and single coin braces decorate the waisted apron. A beautiful example of traditional Chinese furniture, these minimal rose chairs have developed a gorgeous patina with time, burnished smooth along the seat, arms and footrest from centuries of use.
