About the Item

Provenance: Villa Freya, Asolo and since 1970s Artistic myArtistic collections Important and elegant pair of Art Nouveau chairs of Central European and Habsburg influence, made in the early 1900s and traceable to the refined applied arts culture of the Wiener Werkstätte that developed between Vienna, the Danube area, and northeastern Italy. The chairs are made entirely of solid walnut wood, carefully selected and finished with traditional polishing, which gives a warm dark-brown hue and highlights the natural grain of the material. The quality of the wood and the precision of execution testify to a high level of workmanship, intended for an educated and demanding clientele. The slender, balanced structure rests on slender, tapered legs connected by turned crossbeams that provide stability without weighing down the whole. The proportions are harmonious and carefully calibrated, following a formal language that emphasizes elegance, visual lightness and functionality. The Vienna straw seat, with regular and finely executed weave, is a distinctive element of clear Habsburg ancestry. Widespread in the territories of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Vienna straw was particularly valued for its qualities of comfort, hygiene and durability, as well as for its aesthetic value. The weave is set in a shaped wooden frame, which is perfectly integrated into the chair structure. The highly refined design of the backrest forms the decorative centerpiece of the ensemble: a shaped and pierced board with a curvilinear and symmetrical course, embellished with stylized organic motifs typical of the Art Nouveau repertoire of the Viennese area. In the center, a delicate inlay of plant motifs, made from lighter woods, creates an elegant color contrast and emphasizes the verticality of the composition, without ever overdoing decorativism. The stated provenance from Villa Freya in Asolo give this pair additional historical and cultural value. Asolo, in the early decades of the twentieth century, was an important crossroads of Italian and Central European artistic influences, making the presence of Art Nouveau-Viennese-style furniture in that c This pair of chairs represents a high-end example of Habsburg-influenced Art Nouveau furniture, ideal for collectors, interior designers and galleries specializing in early 20th-century decorative arts. Perfect both as functional items and as collectibles, they fit naturally into historic, eclectic or contemporary interiors of refined taste. CURIOSITY : STORY OF A MYTH , the owner of Villa Freya Freya Stark (Paris 1893 - Asolo 1993), English explorer and writer, was the last heir to a lineage of great English travelers of the caliber of Kipling and Lawrens and, through her adventurous travels in the Middle East, became a legendary figure of the 20th century. Linked to the most prominent personalities of her time, from Churcill to the Queen Mother, from Marshals Montgomery, Allemby, Kitchener and others, to the legendary Lawrence of Arabia, Freya Stark carried out important missions for the Foreign Office. FREYA_STARK A Crocerossina on the Karst during World War I, in 1927 Freya Stark made numerous trips and missions to the East, organizing expeditions to Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Persia and Arabia until 1937. The post-World War II period saw her involved in numerous trips around the world before her final retirement in Asolo, which followed her last expedition to Nepal at the age of 88. His close connection with the city of Asolo, which began at an early age when he moved there with his family, was such that he was awarded honorary citizenship and the keys to the City.
