About the Item
This pair of Chiavari chairs with a typical high back have been designed by Gaetano Descalzi in the city of Chiavari in Italy, where they have been produced since then, in various models.
Chiavari was created in 1807 by the Chiavari cabinet maker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, who behind the invitation of the Marquis Stefano Rivarola, reworked some models of French chairs referable to the Empire style, simplifying the decorative apparatus and reducing the sections of the structural elements.
The chair was a success and soon many manufacturers were born in Chiavari and neighboring municipalities: at the death of Gaetano Descalzi, which occurred in 1855, there were about 600 workers employed in the sector. Chiavarina was appreciated by Carlo Alberto di Savoia, by Napoleon III and by the sculptor Antonio Canova.
