About the Item

Shiro Kuramata originally designed the Apple Honey chairs at the request of architect Tadao Ando for the Mon Petit Chou café in Kyoto. Its curved, glossy line of tubular steel forms the back and armrest, before threading through to the legs – a pleasing balancing act to the stricter geometry of the chair’s matte black steel base. The set of chairs is in overall good condition. The seats feature some surface wear and a small scuff is visible on one of the seat’s frames. Shiro Kuramata (b.1931-1991) created a fluid exchange between Japanese design philosophy and European postmodernism. While his training initially centred on traditional woodworking, it was designer Isamu Noguchi at the Kuwasawa Design School who helped him reimagine ancient Japanese traditions in modern materials. Kuramata’s designs are often made from materials that have reflective, transparent, opaque or tactile qualities to them. The forms he created are a refined response to the properties of the materials he used
