About the Item

Rare pair of early Danish modern chairs attributed to architect Vilhelm Groth Hansen, crafted around 1930. The chairs feature striking flame birch frames, displaying beautiful natural figure and warm depth to the surface. The seats retain their original seagrass weave, an uncommon survival that highlights the artisanal character and material honesty of the period. The design demonstrates Groth Hansen’s interest in a refined, architectural simplicity combined with subtle decorative detailing. A related chair drawing by Groth Hansen is preserved in the Architectural Drawing Collection at The Royal Danish Library, underscoring the historical relevance and design lineage of this model. Elegant, sculptural and thoughtfully constructed, this pair represents an early and rarely seen chapter of Danish furniture design, bridging traditional craftsmanship with the emerging modernist sensibility of the 1930s.
