About the Item
An impossibly rare surviving chair produced for the Gio Ponti designed, sunken ocean liner the Andrea Doria. The chair was commissioned by Gio Ponti and most likely designed by Nino Zoncada for the first class lounge. It is understood to have been kept back as a spare.
SS Andrea Doria was a Gio Ponti designed luxury transatlantic ocean liner of the Italian Line (Società di navigazione Italia), put into service in 1953. She is widely known from the extensive media coverage of her sinking on the approach to the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1956, which included the remarkably successful rescue of 1,660 of her 1,706 passengers and crew.
This elegant piece of furniture combines classic Italian design with a rich history, making it a coveted addition for collectors who may want to own a fragment of maritime history and a unique piece Gio Ponti and Nina Zoncada's design legacy.
