About the Item
Rare and charming pair of antique bentwood chairs, possibly by Thonet.
The design of the chair is ingenious and creates a lovely, fluid movement: the chair is made so that one piece of bentwood runs up from the front foot, crosses over, up and through the seat on the opposite side, forming the seat uprights and down to form the back leg. The base is consolidated with a domed X-shape stretcher.
Roll-top back crest.
The backs have been newly upholstered in vintage red ribbed cotton fabric with a foliate motif. The seats cushions tie on at the back.
