About the Item

René Gabriel Reconstruction Oak Dining Chairs, France, 1946 — 48+ Available A large group of original René Gabriel “Reconstruction” oak dining chairs, France circa 1946, each with beautiful patina and strong architectural lines. These “Reconstruction” dining chairs were designed by René Gabriel and produced in France around 1946, during the post-war rebuilding period. Made in solid oak, the chairs exemplify Gabriel’s philosophy of meuble de série—functional, robust, and logically constructed furniture intended for efficient mass production without compromising aesthetic quality. Each chair features a clean, rectilinear frame with subtle curvature in the legs and backrest. The triple horizontal slat back is one of Gabriel’s signature motifs, giving the chairs a distinctive graphic rhythm while retaining comfort and structural strength. The seats are constructed in solid oak as well, contributing to their durability and longevity. All chairs are in good original condition, each showing minor wear and a warm patina that reflects over 75 years of history and use. The natural variations between the chairs—small color differences, subtle grain shifts, gentle wear—enhance their authenticity and character, making each piece unique while maintaining a cohesive, uniform group. René Gabriel (1890–1950) was one of the most influential French designers of the 20th century. Following WWII, he played a central role in designing accessible, durable furniture intended for rapid reconstruction housing programs. His work has become highly collectible, and the Prix René Gabriel is still awarded today to contemporary designers who embrace his ethos: well-designed, practical pieces suited for everyday living. These chairs are ideal for larger dining settings, hospitality projects, restaurants, boutique hotels, cafés, galleries, or residential interiors seeking a cohesive set with true historical depth. A rare opportunity to acquire a large, uniform group of authentic 1940s French Reconstruction chairs.
