About the Item

‘Drouant’ chair in oak with silvered bronze feet. Ruhlmann designed this chair for the fashionable Drouant restaurant in Paris in 1924. The subtle elegance of the design, with its graceful curves, counter-curves, tapering, and swelling, makes it representative of all of Ruhlmann’s work. Moreover, the oak version of the Drouant model was used on the largest French ocean liner of the time, Île-de-France. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York purchased this chair directly from Ruhlmann and Laurent in 1925. The Album des registres of the Musée des Années 30 in Boulogne-Billancourt suggests that the model was produced in two versions: a lighter one, ‘Drouafine,’ ref. 1a NR, and a heavier one, ‘Drouagrasse,’ ref. 1b NR. Ref 67AR-101R. Stamped ‘Ruhlmann’. Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (1879-1933) was a French furniture designer and interior decorator and one of the most important and influential figures of the Art Deco movement, even considered by some the godfather of French Art Deco. His designs are characterized through elegance and purity of form, made with precious materials and expert craftsmanship, combining luxuriousness with modernity. Bibliography: Laurent Guelfucci, ‘Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann’, Galerie Guelfucci, Paris/Berlin, 2025.
