About the Item

Set of four chairs in Macassar ebony. This model was created for the sculptor Joseph Bernard, as a variant of the model made for the pavilion of the Cité Universitaire. Stamped 'Ruhlmann'. Provenance: Model commissioned by Mr. Antonin Lagier, radio-electrician industrialist, 12–14 Rue Edmond Rostand, Marseille. Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (1879-1933) was a French furniture designer and interior decorator and one of the most important and influential figures of the Art Deco movement, even considered by some the godfather of French Art Deco. His designs are characterized through elegance and purity of form, made with precious materials and expert craftsmanship, combining luxuriousness with modernity.
