About the Item

Rare set of ten Cantu dining chairs designed by Sergio Rodrigues in the 1960s, crafted in solid Brazilian rosewood with original faux leather upholstery. The chairs feature elongated, refined proportions with a gently curved crest rail, slender legs, and stretchers that lend both structural clarity and visual lightness. The design balances architectural rigor with warmth and comfort—hallmarks of Rodrigues’ work. Remarkably, the chairs retain their original period faux leather, which has been professionally deep-cleaned and carefully restored to preserve its authentic patina while presenting clean and even in tone. The rosewood frames have been gently refreshed, revealing a rich grain and warm coloration consistent with the period. Widely regarded as the father of Brazilian modern furniture, Sergio Rodrigues (1927–2014) played a defining role in shaping Brazil’s postwar design identity. His work combined modernist principles with native materials and a deep respect for craftsmanship, resulting in designs that were both bold and inviting. The Cantu chairs exemplify this philosophy and stand as enduring icons of Brazilian modernism. Complete sets of this scale are increasingly rare.
