Derived from the French "brut", meaning raw, Brutalism describes the architectural style that emerged in the mid-20th century, post–World War II, when low-cost housing and government buildings were composed of mainly raw, unrefined materials featuring structural elements over decorative design. With their minimalist construction, bare materials and natural colour palette, this set of low chairs embodies Brutalist design characteristics. These low tripod chairs reflect the deliberate simplicity, rawness and strength sought out by the creators of Brutalist pieces. Without any heavy ornamentation, the focus falls on the natural grain of the wood, its authenticity being celebrated, rather than disguised or embellished. At the same time, the clean and defined lines of the chairs are softened through their rounded edges. The sole forms of ornamentation are present on the backrests and legs of the chairs. The semicircles carved at the top of the backrests prevent them from looking heavy, creating an airy look in the midst of the solid structure. Still, the backrests provide plenty of surface to expose the beauty of the wood and natural imperfections, while also ensuring freedom of movement through their rather narrow shape. The designer opted to mirror the carving with an equally-shaped semicircle seat. As for the legs, the chairs are supported by a robust tripod base, with solid, pyramid-shaped wooden legs that taper out, offering increased stability. This set features solid wood construction that showcases the pieces’ bare materials and structural elements. The quality of the woodworking is evident, with handcrafted edges and impeccable joinery, making these chairs perfect for adding organic charm to any interior. Condition: In good vintage condition. Mobichalet, founded by a teacher turned cabinetmaker named Joseph Deffense in Beauraing, Belgium, in 1950, had been active a decade, aiming at furnishing second homes with rustic furnitures, which left a sought after legacy of strikingly powerful and peculiar handcrafted brutalist pieces. The chairs forming this set are typical of the designer : the seat itself is a solid slab of pine wood, the headrest is thick, a simple rectangular cuboid, and, as expected in a brutalist design, the construction is very simple yet efficient and sturdy with no sharp angles. This extremely nice set features an homogeneous seat height and very good backrest angle through all the chairs, ensuring an unexpected and consistent comfort.
