About the Item

Set of Four Italian Renaissance Revival Chairs Italy, Circa 1920–1930 Backrest Height: 118 cm This refined set of four Italian Renaissance Revival chairs embodies the theatrical grandeur and sculptural presence that defined early 20th-century historicist craftsmanship. Made circa 1920–1930, the chairs reinterpret the opulence of 16th-century Italian furniture with remarkable fidelity, combining richly carved woodwork, embossed leather decoration, and robust architectural silhouettes. Each chair features an impressive high backrest measuring 118 cm, shaped in an elegant arched outline studded with hand-applied brass nailheads. The back and seat are upholstered in original tooled leather, deeply embossed with classical motifs: overflowing vases, acanthus scrolls, foliated volutes, fruits, and Renaissance arabesques. The patina of the leather, softened and darkened by time, reveals areas of natural wear consistent with a century of use, enhancing its authenticity and historical allure. The legs are vigorously turned in the Renaissance manner, with melon-shaped balusters and square block feet, connected by stretchers that ensure strength and stability. The carved wood frames retain their dark, warm finish, forming a dignified contrast with the gilt nailheads and the deep brown leather seats. Signs of age, rubbing, and expected surface losses are present throughout, especially on the seat edges, perfectly aligning with the character of an untouched early 20th-century set. The chairs remain structurally sound and visually striking, ideal for collectors, decorators, or interiors seeking a dramatic Old-World atmosphere. A rare and decorative ensemble, full of presence, history, and the unmistakable charm of Italian craftsmanship.

Late 19th-Century Eclectic Paraguayan Salon Suite – Italian Renaissance Revival
Located in Rio De Janeiro, BR
Late 19th-Century Eclectic Paraguayan Salon Suite – Italian Renaissance Revival Meets Criollo Spanish Colonial – Five Pieces An extraordinary and eclectic five-piece salon suite from Paraguay, crafted in the late 19th century, uniting two powerful stylistic lineages: the sculptural drama of the Italian Renaissance Revival and the expressive, hand-tooled vocabulary of South American criollo Spanish Colonial craftsmanship. Composed of one settee, two armchairs, and two side chairs, this ensemble stands as a unique testament to the artistic fusion characteristic of elite regional workshops of the period. The tall ladder-back structures reveal an unmistakable Renaissance influence: architectural symmetry, medallion crowns, and carved foliate scrolls reminiscent of Italian 16th-century ornament. These classical elements are interwoven with the warmth and boldness of criollo carving—deep reliefs, rhythmic floral clusters, rustic vigor, and the unmistakable hand-made quality of South American master artisans. Both the armchairs and the settee feature zoomorphic heads carved at the ends of the armrests, a striking element that bridges Renaissance heraldic tradition with the expressive symbolic language found throughout Colonial Latin American furniture...
