About the Item

A well-preserved set of PJ-SI-26-C writing chairs designed by Pierre Jeanneret for the civic and educational buildings of Chandigarh. Made entirely in solid teak, this model is known as the “Classroom Chair” and is distinguished by its architectural clarity and functional design. Each chair features the characteristic “compass”-type double side leg assembly, joined by a crosspiece and a solid lower board that reinforces structural stability. The asymmetric right leg extends upward to support a fixed writing panel, giving the design its distinctive sculptural silhouette. The backrests are slightly tilted and gently curved, constructed with three horizontal slats. The slatted seat is connected to the back by two solid supports, creating a cohesive, streamlined profile typical of Jeanneret’s Chandigarh furniture. This set retains original provenance markings from Punjab University: P.A.U/AC-036 Dean Room and P.A.U/AC-032 Dean Room, confirming their use within the Dean’s offices and situating them firmly within the documented Chandigarh corpus. An elegant and historically significant pair, showcasing Jeanneret’s commitment to practical, modernist furniture designed for daily use. We welcome all enquiries and ship worldwide.

A good authentic set of two Chandigarh chairs. Artisanally and locally made with pegged solid teak and braided canework in the 1960s. This type is known as the Library chair. The x- “frame” is beautifully complemented with the convex 'banner' type backrest. Previously restored preserving their patina and sturdy enough for everyday use. The original lettering and numbering (referring to their place in one of the government buildings still present. The way Jeanneret designed these chairs is a wonderful example of modernist ideas paired with craftsmanship and classical proportions. Together with the amazing story...
