About the Item

Invented in the United States in 1958, FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) is a new material that was widely introduced in public spaces such as Olympic stadiums, stadiums, and station waiting rooms in the 1960s. Kotobuki, which focused on FRP products in the 1960s, collaborated with Isamu Kenmochi, one of Japan's leading interior designers, to create these vintage chairs. In Japan, with the Olympic Games as an opportunity, we have made it possible to mass-produce durable and inexpensive materials for use in many public spaces. Even now, you can sometimes see them being used at bus stops and stations as a remnant of the past. Charles Ray Eames' shell chair is famous among FRP chairs, but its distinctive feature is that it has a slightly smaller form to suit the Japanese body type. The V-shaped steel legs give it a clean look and reduce the feeling of pressure.

Pair of Armchairs by Isamu Kenmochi for Kotobuki
By Isamu Kenmochi, Kotobuki
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
FRP manufacturing technology was introduced to Japan from America in 1954, as exemplified by the Charles & Ray Eames chairs of the 1950s. By making it possible to create free three-dimensional curved surfaces that were impossible with conventional molded plywood, Isamu Kenmochi, Sori Yanagi, Kenzo Tange, and other designers and architects of the time created numerous FRP products together with Kotobuki, the pioneer Japanese FRP manufacturer.  The chair introduced this time is also designed by Isamu Kenmochi and released by Kotobuki. This is a vintage product from the 60's. This model can be found in the book "Kenmochi Isamu...
