Six Antique Hand-Carved German Tavern / Drinking Chairs with Aphorisms Sayings

About the Item

Unique set of six 19th century tavern chairs. These extremely rare chairs should go to a museum, but if they go to a private buyer who appreciates and takes good care of them, that will be fine too. Over the years we have seen very few tavern chairs and finding a set of 6 handcrafted ones of this age and this quality was just amazing. They are made of thick, solid oak and these relatively heavy chairs are all as stabile as the day they were made. The terrific carved backs are of typical tavern scenes and on two of them there also is a carved aphorism underneath. The language is 'old German'. At the bottom of one of the backs the title of a famous, Latin drinking song is carved....'gaudeamus igitur'. This Latin song is still THE drinking song for many German and Dutch students and it means 'let us rejoice'. It is in the line of 'carpe diem' which also reminds us that life is short. In some of our pictures it may not look like it, but these chairs are all of the same size (within half an inch). There are some old restorations on some of the chairs, but the overall condition is very good to excellent. They are all ready to use and they could -for instance- be perfect when entertaining friends in a mancave. They can also be used as dining chairs, because they are very comfortable and you can easily sit on them for hours. These chairs were made to last and we're sure they will be enjoyed by future generations as well. With only 10 images available it is difficult to show the beauty of all six of these unique and hand-carved chairs, but we hope you get a good impression. Maximum height x width x depth per chair: 39.8 x 18.1 x 20.1 inches. Height of the seats: 18.9 inches. The seats are 1.45 inches thick and the backs are 1.1 inches thick.
