About the Item

Kashima Lounge Chair - Michel Ducaroy - Ligne Roset Early Kashima Lounge Chair, Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, 1982 Original Natural Leather Lounge Chair with Deep Button Tufting This Kashima lounge chair, designed by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, is an early production example from 1982 and represents one of the most desirable iterations of this iconic model. While often mentioned alongside the Togo, the Kashima stands apart through its more architectural presence, generous proportions and distinctly structured silhouette. Conceived as part of Ducaroy’s radical approach to informal seating, the Kashima is constructed entirely from layered foam, without any internal frame. During this period, Ligne Roset used thicker foam layers, heavier leather qualities and a more artisanal level of finishing than in later reissues. This results in superior longevity, deeper comfort and a more substantial overall feel that is immediately noticeable when compared to more recent productions. The original brown natural leather is the defining feature of this piece. Over time it has developed a rich and even patina, with a soft sheen, subtle color variations and beautifully relaxed creasing around the deep button tufting. This type of natural aging cannot be reproduced and is highly valued by collectors. The leather remains supple and expressive, clearly reflecting the quality of materials used during this production period. Early Kashima chairs like this one are increasingly rare, especially in untouched condition. Many examples were reupholstered in later decades, often losing their original character and material integrity. This chair retains its original leather and internal structure, making it an exclusive and highly collectible example from Ligne Roset’s most important era. With its low seat height and enveloping form, the Kashima offers a relaxed yet supportive sitting experience. It works equally well as a sculptural statement piece or as a deeply comfortable lounge chair, fitting seamlessly into modernist, Japandi, minimalist or architectural interiors.
