About the Item

Jean Gillon (1919–2007) was a Brazilian designer of Jewish-Polish descent who became renowned for his work in furniture design and for his significant contributions to Brazilian modernism. He was born in Poland and later moved to Brazil, where he became one of the key figures in the mid-century modern furniture movement. Gillon was particularly recognized for his distinctive use of natural materials, such as wood, rattan, and leather, to create sophisticated yet functional pieces. His designs are known for their unique shapes and traditional forms and for avoiding decorative elements. The chaise longue’s smooth lines are inspired by the silhouette of a boat. The simplicity of the design allows the form and the materials to be the focal point. Low to the ground with long, elegant lines, the work exemplifies the Brazilian modern aesthetic. The caviuna wood used is extremely solid, which permits Gillon to use long, thin pieces without threatening the structural integrity of the chair. This piece has Gillon’s characteristic artistic sensibility: refined, understated, with attention paid to the most minute detail.
