About the Item
Contemporary handmade chaise longue Villa in lacquered steel and string. Homage to Eileen Gray by international Barcelona-based artist Carla Cascales. The seat of chaise longue has been manually handwoven by craftsmen Bogamaria.
A direct reference to the essay by Virginia Woolf; an analogy transported to the world of applied arts. The exhibition’s narrative thread seeks to highlight the role of women in the history of design through the eyes of ten contemporary female designers.
CARLA CASCALES honouring EILEEN GRAY
The starting point for the design of this piece began with a question from creator Carla Cascales: What would Eileen’s most iconic and personal construction, the Villa E-1027, look like if it were an armchair? Since the house was conceived of as a summer holiday residence, Cascales designed an armchair that could function as a deckchair, conceptualized for lounging by the sea, Reading in the sun, relaxing and the like. In this seating typology, Carla aims to compact the materials and architectural lines used by Eileen Gray, principally those of Villa E-1027, a house designed as a minimal, simple, and efficient dwelling. The colour chosen for the armchair is white in honour of the house’s original colour, before Le Corbusier painted his murals on it without Eileen’s permission. The woven fabric of the chair is made of sea grass, an organic and truly Mediterranean material used in outdoor furniture. Gray describes the house as a living organism, an extension of the human experience.
Carla Cascales, based in Barcelona, blends minimalism with architectural influences like brutalism and a strong Mediterranean essence. Her work draws inspiration from Japanese “Wabi Sabi” aesthetics, emphasizing beauty in irregularity and impermanence. Cascales continually explores the essence of forms and balances natural materials, valuing authenticity. She finds profound inspiration in the Mediterranean’s fluidity, calmness, depth, light refections, and vastness.
