About the Item
Stunning French 1950s sculptural form wicker chaise. This chaise has the wonderful juxtaposition of a free form organic flowing organic wicker element mounted on a Minimalist triangulated enameled steel frame adding to the overall lightness and sculptural quality of the design. The form is beautiful from every angle, every new angle you view it from adds another layer of appreciation to the quality of its sculptural form .This design closely resembles the work of French Avant Grade designer Raoul Guys who's work we have admired and worked on for many years Guys' work was greatly admired for its sculptural quality by master French designer, architect and sculptor Andre Bloc who commissioned Guys to work on several important government commissions in France and Africa alongside Prouvé, Perriand and Mouille.
We bought this chaise in France, it was in a sorry state, there were holes in the original wicker and we have had the chaise stripped right back to its bare enameled steel frame and have had new wicker applied (hand woven) exactly to the original specification by a wicker upholstery specialist here in the Netherlands. Please see last three photos which show the chaise in it's as found states and with the wicker removed ready for restoration.
As you can see we have left the original enamel finish to the steel frame which exhibits areas of wear and small enamel loss. Given the fact we have installed new wicker we felt it pertinent to maintain some signs of originality and age to maintain the vintage appeal.
This is a really rare and Fine example of French Mid-Century Modern design, I have not come across this design before.

- Condition:Rewoven. Wear consistent with age and use. New wicker seating has been installed by a wicker specialist here in the Netherlands. We have left the original black enamel finish on the sculptural steel frame to maintain some visible signs of originality, age and use to maintain the provenance.
