Art Deco Faux Crocodile Leather Club Chairs Correctly Restored, 1920s-1930s

About the Item

Every once in a while, we import from France a great pair of old French club chair frames, where the leather is even beyond our conservation expertise and such was the case with this pair of French club chairs. Our in house upholstery department began the restoration process, by stripping down the almost 100-year old frames and rebuilding all the wood joints and fabricating corner blocks (gussets) as necessary. We installed 8-way hand-tied coil springs and used horsehair and shredded coco for padding and even went so far as to install coil springs in the seat cushions. Just to this point in the restoration process, we had spent 32-hours of labor on each chair to bring it back to stronger than new condition. Then the decision was made, to upholster the old French leather club chairs, with a faux croc real leather and we already knew it was used in the 1920s, because we have an original pair still in its 100-year old croc leather. The labor to cover each chair was a full 3-days or another 24-hours, however, upon completion the leather looked too new, so off to the finishing department, to properly age down the croc leather and another 8-hours were consumed on each of the French faux croc club chairs. In whole, we spent 64-man hours of labor, to restore one single French club chair and some may call us a bit mad, but it is tough to argue with the results. We have about 75-club chairs in stock at any one time, between our Chicago and Toulouse warehouses and many are listed on 1stdibs and in the coming weeks, all will be on 1stdibs. There are even some single chairs that we could upholster in faux croc for you or any optional leather of your choosing.
