About the Item

Presented at the “Salon des Artistes Décorateurs”, Paris 1969, a design by Danielle Quarante, titled ‘Albatros,’ executed in fiberglass with a gel coat finish. These came into my possession having been refinished twice—the most recent a chipped, scratched base coat clear coat (automotive paint) in black. My original plan was to strip down completely and restore to the original goldenrod color peeking through. A pattern began to emerge as I worked through the top layers. As I continued, the pattern became more complex and appealing. The backs of these chairs are reminiscent of the curvy 30s Bugattis Mercedes Silver Arrow race cars. With the current trend of restoring classic cars to drive-ability but appreciating the natural patinated paint, this finish seemed a natural complement to these chairs. At home in myriad decors, these functional works of art could also be displayed in garages next to your collection. If this patinated look isn’t to your liking, most of the prep work is done — only primer and your choice of paint await your custom creation. Paint them British Racing Green to match your e-type or classic Aston. Maybe Iridium Silver to go with your 300SL. They’re comfortable, too, so the hours will fly as you enjoy them watching tapes of Ayrton Senna, Nikki Lauda, Michael Schumacher, or more contemporary matchups between Hamilton and Verstappen. If car racing isn’t your thing, the possibilities are endless to match modern-art centered decors, more simple organic modern, or whatever your imagination dreams up. A thin layer of high-carnauba wax has been applied to deepen the colors. If a new finished is desired, simply have this removed with a clay bar.

Gigi Sabadin “Pala” Dining Chairs for Emme, 1973, Set of 4
By Gigi Sabadin
Located in Lonigo, Veneto
Gigi Sabadin “Pala” dining chairs for Emme, wood, Italy, 1973, set of four Designed in 1973 by Italian architect and designer Gigi Sabadin, the “Pala” chairs embody the radical experimentation of the Italian Seventies. Their structure reduces the archetype of a chair to an essential gesture: two vertical planes intersected by a suspended circular seat in woven straw. The stark black lacquered wood, resting on a double-base support, highlights the tension between geometric rigor and the organic tactility of natural fiber. Sabadin’s design language resonates with the conceptual explorations of Archizoom, Superstudio, and Gianni Pettena, where furniture transcends function to become a spatial and architectural statement. The radical minimalism of the “Pala” also recalls the self-reduction principles of Enzo Mari...
