Lovely original WG 1738 stamped French club armchair with early Toile De Jouy upholstery Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, for an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll price it up for you As mentioned the frame is stamped on the back left inside leg at the top which is favourite of the good old boys at Howard Son’s, this I don’t think is one of theirs though, it seems allot older to me Toile de jouy fabric originated in France in the 1760s. The original patterns usually depicted pastoral scenes; today there are many pattern choices and colors available. The French patterned cotton fabric known as toile de Jouy got its start in 1760 at a textile factory in the village of Jouy-en-Josas, southwest of Paris near Versailles. Toile simply means cloth in French, so that toile de Jouy literally means cloth of Jouy. But known more commonly by its shortened name, toile doesn't refer to just any cotton print from that region of France. Toile has a distinct look, even though it is available in a range of colors and patterns. The original 1760s patterns usually depicted pastoral scenes of the French countryside. Then more exotic Chinese themes became popular, as did famous moments from history. All were hand-drawn in a curvaceous style with fine detail that was then etched onto wood blocks and printed onto the fabric. The upholstery has been professionally cleaned from top to bottom, it has some yellowing around the bottom on all sides from normal age and wear, there is some fraying around the lower corners, not allot but some as pictured below, I’m not sure how old the upholstery is but it has some good age to it The frame is structurally perfect, it’s a coil sprung base as you would expect, the padding is horse hair so has that lovely crunchy sound if you squeeze it, honestly this chair is a rare and lovely find Dimensions Height:- 84.5cm Width:- 80cm Depth:- 84cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask Any questions please feel free to ask before you bid CONDITION Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please also ask any questions before you bid and not after, all of our items are sold as seen and as listed Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade
