About the Item

This multifunctional daybed was manufactured by Robert Slezák in the 1930s and is a fine example of Bauhaus-era tubular steel furniture. Designed to function as both a sofa and a daybed, it reflects the Modernist principles of clarity, functionality, and efficient use of space. The construction features a chrome-plated tubular steel frame with clean, architectural lines typical of Bauhaus design. Upholstered elements soften the industrial structure and provide comfort while remaining visually restrained. The integrated storage unit, executed in lacquered wood panels in a restrained grey tone, is discreetly incorporated into the overall design and enhances the piece’s practical versatility. The upholstery is executed in a high-quality woven fabric by Backhausen, a manufacturer closely associated with Viennese Modernism and Bauhaus interiors. The geometric pattern is period-appropriate. The fabric shows slight fading on the seating surface, consistent with age, which gives the piece a subtle vintage character without affecting its overall appearance. The upholstery and padding are structurally sound and in excellent condition. The daybed was professionally restored approximately ten years ago, including reupholstery carried out in accordance with the original design. The chrome plating is in excellent condition, and the lacquered wooden elements show only minor age- and use-related traces. Historically, the piece is linked to Robert Slezák’s close cooperation with Thonet-Mundus. The company also held licenses to manufacture furniture designs by leading Bauhaus architects and international modernist designers, including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam, Bruno Weill, and others. This context underlines the high production quality and historical relevance of the present object.
