About the Item
A quintessential piece of Dutch Mid-Century design, this "Cleopatra" daybed was designed in the 1950s by A.R. Cordemeyer for the Royal Auping company. Celebrated for its minimalist elegance and functional form, this particular example has been thoughtfully updated for contemporary use. The daybed features a striking new custom-made mattress, newly upholstered in a luxurious printed velvet from the renowned British design house, House of Hackney, making it a standout piece that bridges iconic design with modern artistry.
The daybed’s construction highlights the harmonious blend of industrial and natural materials characteristic of the era. A gracefully slender black enameled metal frame provides a sturdy base, while solid teak ends add warmth and organic texture. The new upholstery, House of Hackney's "Moon Garden Velvet" in the Midnight colorway, introduces a rich, botanical pattern that provides a captivating contrast to the frame’s clean lines. This spirited fabric choice elevates the daybed from a simple piece of furniture to a functional work of art.
Offered in excellent vintage condition, the daybed is ready for immediate use. The metal frame is in its original state, showing some visible wear, including minor enamel loss, scratches, and dents that contribute authentic character consistent with its age and history. The teak ends have been lightly refinished to restore their natural luster. This combination of a preserved vintage frame with fresh, high-end upholstery creates a compelling narrative of past and present.
