About the Item
Freestanding Sofa Model 'Constanze' by Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, Austria, Mid-Century, c. 1970
A beautiful example of mid-century Austrian design, this Constanze sofa was designed by Prof. Johannes Spalt for Wittmann and manufactured in the late 1960s or early 1970s. With a single movement, it transforms from a sleek sofa into a daybed, a testament to Spalt’s elegant approach to functional design.
This freestanding piece features a black steel frame and retains a newly upholstered fabric in a warm coral red tone. The textile is in excellent vintage condition. Thanks to its fully upholstered back, the sofa can be placed freely in the room, making it a stunning centerpiece from all angles.
A matching pair of lounge chairs and lounge table is available in a separate listing (see last photo).
About Prof. Johannes Spalt:
Johannes Spalt studied at the Salzburg School of Arts and Crafts and, starting in 1949, architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Clemens Holzmeister. He co-founded the influential architecture collective Arbeitsgruppe 4 with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent, and Otto Leitner (who left in 1953), later known as the "3/4-ler." From 1969, Spalt ran his own studio in Vienna, occasionally collaborating with Friedrich Kurrent. From 1973 to 1990, he was a professor of interior architecture and industrial design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, serving as its rector from 1975 to 1979. Alongside his architectural work, Spalt designed numerous pieces of furniture, particularly for Wittmann. He also co-curated seminal exhibitions on Adolf Loos (Paris, 1962; Vienna, 1964) and Josef Frank (Vienna, 1965), helping to shape modern Austrian design discourse.
