About the Item

Daybed in Louis XVI style reflects the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Daybed Louis XVI features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the previous Louis styles. Daybed in Louis XVI style, dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century. Authentic Daybed in Louis XVI style characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of previous Louis style which was before the Louis XVI style for something more geometric and symmetrical. The Daybed in Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favourite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serve ware, vases and other decorative objects. The renowned designer Paul Mathieu has re-interpreted this classic form. Originating in 16th century France and known as a “Daybed in Louis XVI style”, or “Louise Chaise”, it was adopted by the British and brought to India during “Raj” period. Paul’s low, curvaceous interpretation is a contemporary homage to the traditional Indian craft of metal clad furniture. This elegant piece is hand carved from solid pieces of teak. Pattern-makers trace and cut complex forms that will cover the table from thick sheets of copper, brass or white bronze or silver which can be smooth or hammered. Once the Daybed in Louis XVI style is joined together, it is meticulously encased in a tight-fitting metal skin. Customization is our specialty. Daybed Louis XVI style in White Bronze on Teakwood, Louis XVI Daybed by Paul Size- 70" x 24" x 33"H Materials - White Bronze, Teak, Hand-Crafted Please note that moisture in air, sudden change in temperature and natural movement of wood over time causes the metal to wrinkle or bubble up. We use well seasoned, reclaimed teak and high quality marine grade MDF (wherever technically possible) to avoid and delay the above mentioned changes. However a perfect stability of metal cannot be guaranteed. Please note that our smooth finish metal clad pieces will have some unavoidable tool marks. This is proof that everything is done by hand. The smooth finish will not come out like a machine made perfect surface and the master artisan will do their best to make it look as good/clean/stable/perfect as he possibly can. Our hammered finishes are a much safer option if the tool mark scratches are unacceptable. The hammered finishes are also safer against eventual bubbling/wrinkles due to natural forces as mentioned above.
