About the Item

The Bossche school was a traditionalist movement in Dutch architecture which was strong on numerical relationships. The style also translated into furniture design as a three-dimensional elaboration of the golden ratio. A notable feature of the Bossche School is the sober design that was largely influenced by the Dutch Benedictine monk and architect, Dom Hans van der Laan. This daybed is made of solid stained wood and features large nails throughout the structure, creating a rustic look. The body is entirely stained black, including the nails, which enhances the almost brutalist look. The main focus of the design is evidently functionality and rationality, which is reflected in the straight lines, the raw wooden surfaces, and the simple joinery as well. The legs are crafted from large pieces of wood and have the same unique rectangular shape that reach up to the height of the frame. The elemental look of the wood is softened by the upholstered seat cushion and round pillows. The bolster pillows add a decorative accent at the front and back, highlighting the exceptional length of this daybed. The interesting pattern and colour scheme of the fabric perfectly complements the frame’s colour while also providing contrast. It adds a light luxurious element that may not be in the vein of the Bossche School’s design ideals, but it possesses an understated elegance that is timeless. The traditionalist movement latched ecclesiastical aesthetic to the art of architecture and to furniture design as well. Minimalist, honest design define pieces influenced by the Bossche School, and these characteristics make this daybed charming, additionally to being a beautiful piece of Dutch design history.
