About the Item

Wood and metal daybed with brass elements, upholstered mattress and cushions, produced by Rima, designed by Gastone Rinaldi, 1950s The headboard and footboard of this daybed, produced by Rima in the 1950s, are made from curved plywood secured to the structure with brass rivets. The clean lines and rationalist spirit of the design firmly place this piece among Gastone Rinaldi’s most iconic projects. Born in Padua, Italy, Rinaldi had an early career as a professional footballer and later collaborated with some of the most prominent architects of his time. A sportsman, socialite, and collector of rare pipes, Rinaldi was also passionate about motor racing and enthusiastically participated in the Mille Miglia. In his later years, he developed a distinctive style that earned him the prestigious "Compasso d'Oro" award in 1954 for an innovative chair designed for Rima, the same brand that produced the featured daybed. When examining this piece alongside the award-winning chair, one can observe a shared design trait in the slender legs that support both structures. These small black-painted metal trestles are a hallmark of Rinaldi’s designs, showcasing his keen attention to balancing diverse materials in perfect harmony. The presented daybed has undergone a complete restoration of its wooden components and upholstery. It now comes with a high-quality fabric-covered mattress and a distinctive crescent-shaped cushion that is both comfortable and decorative. Dimensions: 196w x 93d x 52h cm
