About the Item

Rare minimalist daybed called "Plein" designed by Georges Candilis and Anja Blomstedt, manufactured by Sentou in France in 1969. Designed for the residence “Les Carrats” in Port Leucatein France. This minimalist piece of furniture is made of solid beech wooden feet and a plywood top shelf connected to each other with a square cast aluminum corner which was characteristic for the designs by Candilis Blomstedt. Extremely refined minimal design. This daybed has been covered in Isabel fabric by Pierre Frey in off-white blouclé, and is sold with the 2 small boudin-shaped cushions you can see in the photo. Furnishings for the vacation village Les Carrats in Port-Leucate. Designed and manufactured in 1969, then produced by Sentou exclusively for Les Carrats from 1970 to 1971. Serge Lemoine, professor of art history at the Sorbonne and former curator of the Musée d'Orsay, wrote in his blog about the interest in the reappearance of these pieces of furniture, which fit in perfectly with the research of functionalist architecture, which aimed for standardization as well as economy of means, and where form had to respond directly to function. Such is the case with these minimalist low chairs, which are straight to the point. In recent years, a number of buildings designed by Candilis have been awarded the "Patrimoine XXème" label by the French authorities, such as the CAF vacation village "Les Carrats" in Port-Leucate (Aude), for which he designed original furniture in collaboration with Anja Blomstedt, a Finnish interior designer and collaborator of Charlotte Perriand. The furniture was manufactured and assembled by the Sentou workshops. A rare edition, handcrafted in a few hundred pieces, this furniture was intended exclusively for these seasonal homes. Their simple, raw form is directly reminiscent of Gerrit Rietveld's exemplary creations. Georges Candilis Anja Blomstedt offer us a distinctive, radical and sober design whose beauty comes from the extreme simplicity of Nordic influences. Committed to the idea of housing as many people as possible, Georges Candilis devoted most of his time to designing large-scale housing programs. His involvement and influence made him one of the most original architects of the great wave of social construction in the 60s.

Matthias Biberon Bench in Oak
By Matthias Biberon
Located in Santa Gertrudis, Baleares
Matthias Biberon (Paris, 1977) lives and works in Perche (Normandy / France). He began working with wood in 2019, leaving behind photography and ceramics, which he had practiced successfully for many years. In wood, he finds the pleasure of imagining shapes and building them, with a combination of both naivety and attention to detail, and a freedom that neither conceptualism nor ceramics had given him. His furniture is organic, respecting the original shape of the wood and following its knots and veins. The search for balance and precision is one of the cornerstones of Matthias's work. Carefully sourced, the wood types used - Oak, Elm, Cedar, Walnut - have been dried for decades, giving them an unrivalled patina. His trademark? Visible construction and the blending of materials, with stone a natural addition to his creations; for each of them, he seeks a form of balance, purity and softness, a functionality that is both poetic and sculptural, the simplicity and force of a haiku. Passionate about art, it was while progressing towards Arts & Crafts that he embraced the aesthetics of functionalism, Mingeï and the thinking of William Morris. He is sensitive to the Arte Povera of Jannis Kounellis and Giovanni Anselmo, the Zen influence of John Cage, the freedom of Don Cherry...
