About the Item
A monumental French Empire Revival daybed, crafted in France in the mid 19th century. The piece is built around a finely polished solid mahogany frame and richly mounted with heavy gilt bronze ornaments of exceptional quality. Both ends are shaped as elegant swan necks, a motif closely associated with the imperial vocabulary of early 19th century Parisian design.
The paneled apron is adorned with an impressive sequence of cast bronze appliques, including winged griffins, palmettes, floral garlands, lyres and classical trophies. The sculptural mounts are crisp, deeply chased and retain a beautiful gilded surface. The daybed stands on gilt bronze mounted paws with refined carved details and decorative rings.
The seat has been newly upholstered in a soft cream fabric that complements the warmth of the mahogany and the gilding. Generous in scale and meant to be viewed from both sides, the daybed reflects the luxurious reinterpretation of Empire aesthetics that flourished during the Napoleon III period. The overall craftsmanship shows the influence of the great Parisian ateliers of the Empire tradition, including the celebrated work of Jacob Desmalter, without being a direct attribution.
A rare and highly decorative statement piece suitable for both classical and contemporary interiors, perfect for designers and collectors seeking true 19th century French grandeur.
In nice, original condition with minimal wear throughout. The mahogany retains a warm and even patina and the upholstery remains unfaded. The gilt bronze mounts show light, age-appropriate gilt loss in some areas, where parts of the gilding have naturally softened and mellowed over time. Overall the piece is well preserved, structurally sound and visually very strong for its age.
