About the Item

Vintage Daybed by Christian Durupt, 1960s – French Modernist Design, Collaboration with Charlotte Perriand This is a vintage daybed crafted in the 1960s by the skilled French furniture maker Christian Durupt. Christian Durupt was a prominent French cabinetmaker active in the mid-20th century, celebrated for his masterful use of solid wood and finely crafted, durable furniture. He excelled at highlighting the natural beauty of materials while seamlessly blending functionality with elegant design. Durupt was also deeply engaged in modernist architecture, most notably collaborating with the renowned architect Charlotte Perriand to design interiors for mountain chalets in the Savoie region of France. In their joint projects, Durupt and Perriand created furniture and interiors that responded to the challenges of alpine climates, combining Durupt’s expert woodworking with Perriand’s modernist design philosophy. The result was a harmonious blend of warmth, functionality, and refined aesthetic, making the interiors both comfortable and visually striking. This experience greatly influenced Durupt’s later works, reflecting his understanding of furniture that adapts to architectural space. This daybed was likely created for a chalet in the Meribel ski resort and showcases a rare fusion of Durupt’s technical skill and Perriand’s modernist design approach. Its solid wood construction, elegant flowing lines, and exceptional functionality make it not only a practical piece of furniture but also a compelling work of French modernist design history.
